On His Own is the new Grand National favourite after an excellent win in the Boyne Hurdle at Navan yesterday.
While highly fancied stablemate Thousand Stars struggled, On His Own produced a strong staying performance to run down Si C’Etait Vrai and score by two and half lengths.
Trainer Willie Mullins said he was delighted with the effort and will have to rethink the Grand National preparations for the son of Presenting.
“I’ve been trying to find a suitable hurdle race for him,” Mullins said.
“He was a novice (over hurdles) before today but he’s won a nice prize over hurdles now.
“Coming here today the plan was to give him another run over fences before the National but after winning today we might review that and he could have another run over hurdles.”
Thousand Stars started the race as odds-on favourite but never looked in the contest and trailed home the field of six.
Mullins blamed the condition of the track for the poor performance but said the nine-year-old remained on track for the Aintree Hurdle.
“Ruby Walsh said he just couldn’t handle the ground,” the leading trainer said.
“He came back in with muck halfway up his knees and just seemed to sink into it.
“He’s unlikely to run at Cheltenham as the Aintree Hurdle is the one race we really have in mind for him.”
On His Own now shares top billing in the Grand National betting market, at Bet365, with Prince De Beauchene, both horses available at Grand National odds of 10/1.
They are followed in the betting market by Irish gelding Seabass (14/1), Evan Williams-trained Cappa Bleu (14/1), eight year-old Join Together (15/1) and Pertemps Handicap Hurdle winner Colbert Station (17/1).
